Kate's Weight Loss surgery diary
On 1st April 2 years ago (yes, April Fools day!) I had a gastric sleeve. Just less than two years on and I had lost nine and a half stones. Happier and healthier, I was left with extra skin and so I decided to visit Anita Hazari at the Chaucer Hospital, where we discussed abdominoplasty and breast uplift. I didn't want to change my body shape for anyone else, just for me. Even though I had lost lots of weight, I was still not happy with my body shape and didn't recognise myself as the slim woman in the mirror. Miss Hazari recommended that I see a psychologist to ensure that I would be ready for surgery. Thankfully, the psychologist said that my feelings were not unusual for someone who had lost lots of weight so quickly.
Other health problems of mine include Type 1 Diabetes (requiring insulin) since the age of 12, and Ulcerative Colitis, which I've had for the past 16 years. I am now 47.
My operation went well and during the first week I healed quickly. Then, unfortunately some of the areas I had been operated on became infected due to my diabetes, and I had to go to the Chaucer hospital three times a week to get dressings changed and for my medical progress to be assessed. I was given a course of antibiotics, which in turn affected my ulcerative colitis very badly and I could not be far from a bathroom. My diabetes control also suffered and resulted in cellulitis of the legs. I felt as if I was in a downward spiral. After being put on a course of steroids by my Physician to settle my Ulcerative Colitis, I was soon on the mend.
Now, life is looking much better, with the bonus of a flat stomach and breasts that are a much better shape. I was treated with care, respect and compassion from Miss Hazari, Bev and Tessa treating my wounds and the advice given to me.
It is only two months from my plastic surgery and after a few hiccups and at one point feeling low, now I feel full of optimism and praise for the care given to me. I am really pleased with the results of the surgery.
